Medical Resources
by Lift Caregiving
Here is a snapshot of the medical resources available to you and your loved one.
Your Loved One’s Physician
The best person for your loved one to visit in regards to a medical problem is his or her primary health care provider. If the physician is not available, see if you can talk to the nurse.
If your loved one experiences a health emergency, is bleeding or has a high fever, call 911 immediately.
“Ask –A-Nurse”
Many communities and some health insurance companies offer a telephone service staffed by nurses. These nurses will give general medical advice and can help you analyze the urgency of the situation, but it is important to know that they cannot diagnose or prescribe.
Check with your doctor’s office, local hospital or insurance provider to see if an Ask-A-Nurse program exists where you live.
Occupational Therapists
These licensed health professionals are trained to help people who have trouble getting around or doing things independently. They can be especially helpful to people who have physical limitations associated with arthritis, a recent surgical procedure or hospitalization.
More specifically, they can teach you and your loved one safe ways to move about, they can teach you how to protect yourself from injury and help keep your loved one from putting too much stress on weak joints or muscles and they can recommend simple changes to make in the home to help make moving about easier. To find an occupational therapist near you, visit the Services section of our site.
